Nacra 15 Training
As most of our youth sailors join the Nacra class with very little catamaran sailing experience, we offer regular class training to help sailors get up to speed and sailing competitively. The UK Nacra 15 Class operate training throughout the year which is open to sailors of all abilities. The RYA also run more advanced training for those invited to join the RYA British Youth Sailing Team (BYST). Private coaching is also available upon request.
Nacra 15 Class Open Training
As a class, we organise Nacra 15 training weekends throughout the year which is open to all class members. These are run by our class coaches, who are all ex-Nacra 15 sailors, so have a lot of valuable experience to share. The training weekends will be mostly on the water, with some on-shore theory sessions before/after. We hold these at various venues to give experience of a range of locations and sailing conditions.
To encourage sharing of knowledge between newer and more experienced teams, we run our class open training alongside the RYA BYST Nacra 15 training. Shared on-shore and on the water sessions allow all teams to learn from one another. The training weekends often end with some fun informal races, giving everyone a chance to beat the BYST sailors!
If you are new to the class, this is a great opportunity to get to know the other sailors and the coaches.
Keep an eye on our Events and Training calendar for details of our upcoming class training camps. This is also where you need go to enter our training camps.
RYA British Youth Sailing Team
The RYA's British Youth Sailing Team (BYST) Performance Squads are designed to enable the best British sailors to develop their racing skills so that they can compete successfully both domestically and at international championships. Entry to the Nacra 15 BYST squad is by selection - find out more on the RYA Youth Squads website.
Ultimately, every youth squad sailor should have the potential to meet the below criteria:
To qualify to represent Great Britain at the Youth Sailing World Championships
To perform at World and European Championships
To successfully transition into the British Sailing Team Olympic pathway
To develop a lifelong passion for the sport
As an RYA Youth Pathway class, the RYA typically selects the top 4 Nacra 15 teams to be part of the British Youth Sailing Team, with winter training focusing on developing key skills, behaviours and understanding, while the summer training programme focuses on racing performance.
The BYST Nacra 15 training is coached by our RYA Nacra 15 head coach Theo Williams. Full information on the RYA BYST Performance Squads and the selection criteria can be found here.
Private Nacra 15 Coaching
A great way to give sailors a boost with specific aspects of their sailing is with a private coaching session. Depending on where you are in your Nacra 15 sailing journey, this could be learning the basics of sailing the boat, or seeking marginal gains at the top level - the session will be tailored to your specific needs. Our Nacra 15 Class coaches are keen to share their experience and are available to provide private coaching sessions. If you are interested, please email the UK Nacra 15 Class for more details.
